I have such a huge void in my life.... Our marriage was filled with the typical ups and downs, but we survived... for 21 years. We spent almost that whole time together. We shopped together, holidayed together, and enjoyed our time together. Yes, the last couple of months were stressful for me, but we were together. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way and I know Len felt the same way. Our idea of "fun" was spending it with family... We were fortunate to live nearby to Len's sons and their families and he always made sure that I saw my family as much as possible. I was loved and I loved him! I miss that the most, hearing him tell me that he loves me... It was priceless to me... Then there was his laugh, his joking, his gorgeous hazel eyes....

Here are the eulogies read at Leonard's funeral. The first is from Al Sharpe, Len's oldest friend. They met in foster care over 70 years ago.

Len

I have known Len since 1937. We were both born in 1930. Both victims of the Great Depression. We were wards of the Children's Aid Society. I am 9 months older than Len.

We both arrived in Vandorf, I in 1936, and Len in 1937. He stayed with us for about 7 years, and then he was adopted by a couple from Sharon, ON: Daisy and Arthur Russell. They just adored him.

They lived in an old rambling farm house. Len was lonely, but I happily volunteered to visit him often. The kitchen table was large, and Arthur had built a small, (but large) billiard table underneath. Len became quite a pro at the game! Daisy would often be shouting at us to go out and play, as she wanted to set up the table for supper.... Arthur is coming from work. I could go on and on about Len and I when we were kids, but we would be here for hours.

Arthur owned and operated the BA garage in Sharon. They built a small bungalow beside it. Len's teens and young adult years were lived there. I lived there a couple of times myself!

Len was going south out of Richmond Hill one day when he came across a young lady with a flat tire on her car. He stopped, changed the tire and got her phone number! Into his life came a jewel of a lady called "Marilyn". I was his best man at their wedding in 1956, I think it was?

They finally moved to Queensville and built an extension on the house... they had to as they had three sons and Daisy. Arthur had passed on. We lost Marilyn way too soon in 1981. Ivy and I missed the funeral as we were down East with our family, 2 boys and 2 girls, in our Suburban and trailer. We knew nothing of this, until we arrived home. Ivy phoned Marilyn to tell her about the trip and see how she was. Len told her what happened.

Len was very upset we weren't there, and I lost contact with him for over 20 years.

Len called one day and left his phone number and address. I stopped in on my way back up north and became reacquainted with him for the second time. Ivy and I stopped in to see him and his wife, Beth Ann, many times.

I am very happy that Len and I could sit down and go over our times. Just the two of us. To see the sparkle in his eye and to hear that laugh was golden. The last few times I have visited Len have been hard on me! That is how our dad entered this world on Saturday, October 11, 1930. The Great Depression was not a great time to be a kid and he had very few good memories of that time. His family was
very poor and he eventually became a ward of the province. Through this very challenging period one bond was struck that has lasted a lifetime. Allan Sharpe was and is dad’s very best friend – a relationship that goes back more than 74 years. Al was a frequent visitor during Dad’s last days and he looked forward to every one of them.

Dad’s big break came on October 14, 1940. That is the day Mr. Arthur Russell, Granddad, picked him up from what would be his last in a string of foster homes. While Dad had few good memories of his life before and while in foster care, his life with the Russells was the start of another chapter. Dad was formally adopted by Granddad in 1944 and was honoured to accept the Russell name.

Granddad was a blacksmith, a wheelwright and a machinist. Granddad purchased the Sharon Garage in 1943 and that is where Dad got hooked on anything with an engine – and I mean anything. During these adolescent and young adult years Dad was a little wild. Nothing too serious, but nothing that you would even contemplate today.

If Dad’s big break was the day Arthur Russell picked up Dad at the foster home, the mother lode was in 1956 with his marriage to Marilyn Edythe Thornton. I know that the early years were very challenging but mother’s life was always about taking on special projects. Mom and Dad were both driven and neither could “go along for the ride”. Many evenings Dad would arrive home after a late night at the garage. He would have dinner and be sound asleep in his reclining chair soon thereafter.

Some children get to participate in organized sports. If they are fortunate their parents may even be involved in coaching – or not so fortunate as the case may be. Mom and Dad were both committed volunteers. Dad managed and coached minor baseball for years and served as Chairman of the East Gwillimbury association for 8 years. He was also President or Past President of the East Gwillimbury Minor Hockey association for 15 years. I can remember spending many weekends at the rink – playing and/or watching as Dad did his “thing” – Len, Mark and I were the original rink rats.

Oh the rink ....The East Gwillimbury Community Center. Many communities take their facilities for granted but the Town did not have a rink in 1969 and the political leadership of the day was not interested in building one – too expensive. Enter Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad cochaired the East Gwillimbury Community Centre Committee. This group of community activists did the research, identified the funding and put a plan
together to get the rink built. When they delivered the plan and the petition with the support of 80% of the residents of the community, their objective was all but achieved. In an era without the internet and cellular phones, the organization of this group was phenomenal – that was Mom’s contribution along with lobbying provincial officials. Dad – he stirred the pot at the local political level, got the support of the local newspaper and secured the support of other community leaders. What a team!

It was this experience that coloured Dad’s perspective with respect to politicians – not all – but certainly most.

As Dad has said, he and mom had a deal. Dad handled the bills at home. Mom handled the education of the children. Dad, by his own admission was a skin flint – always looking for the good deal. The problem with Dad was that while he could find many ways to stretch a dollar, he could never hang on to any of them. We would all learn later in life that it was the discipline of mother that kept the household stable. Mom had a lot of
support from Albert and Edythe Thornton – Papa and Grandma – probably more than we will ever know.

Dad had a number of passions. As with their community activism there were no half measures.

Antique motor vehicles – a passion taken up from Granddad Russell. Together they stripped and restored a number of vehicles in painstaking detail. Granddad the machinist and Dad the mechanic. Patience. The ultimate trait of a person committed to the restoration of motor vehicles. Dad had it in abundance when it came to his passions and his craft, but he exhibited little of it in other areas. My favourite was the 1902 Northern. A single piston, fire engine red classic that won many “best in show” honours.

Rebuilding of antique motor vehicles was their passion – today it could be a business.

From antique motor vehicles he went on to boating. Mom and Dad purchased a 25 ft Owens cabin cruiser. It was a gorgeous teak vessel that Dad kept shined up like a new penny. As with any passion he added the toys and kept it running like a fine Swiss time piece. He became a member of Power Squadron and learned all things nautical. The Lazy Bones became our summer cottage and was the source of many adventures on
Lake Simcoe, Georgian Bay and the Trent-Severn waterway. Dad always had a sense of humour. On the Lazy Bones we had a dingy. It was for emergency use and for auxiliary transportation. Dad christened it “The Three Dinks”. I was always Dink #1. Len Dink #2. Mark Dink #3. – the Three Dinks. I am not sure everyone got it.

Snowmobiles – Russell’s Garage became a snowmobile dealership. I am not sure if Dad got into the business because it could be a good business or because it stoked another passion. Whatever the motivation there were a lot of perks to being in the snowmobile business. Summers for boating and lots of snowmobiling in the winter. Mother was not big on the snowmobiling part.

Motorcycles – a passion dad had indulged as a teenager and a young adult, but one I think he had to give up after he met mom. At some point dad got back into motorcycles. I think there was a pact between mom and dad that the kids were not to be encouraged to partake. In many respects this was probably very wise. I narrowly escaped serious injury on numerous two wheeled collisions. I would hate to think what might happen with me on a motorcycle.

When mother became ill and with the prognosis no longer in doubt, dad’s passion for motorcycles increased exponentially. We all deal with grief differently, but when mother passed away in 1981 dad was lost – he turned to motorcycles and touring to fill the void. He had joined Retreads, organized rallies and travelled North America extensively. He was as passionate in the customization of his motorcycles as he was in the restoration of his antique automobiles.

Through motorcycle touring he built more relationships. Some we, including dad, all want to forget about. Others were equal to his passion. It is through his touring that he met, pursued (others would say “stalked”) and courted Beth Ann Hazen (nee Folkerts).

Dad and Beth Ann were married July 22, 1988. Based upon previous experience, we of the Russell clan were somewhat sceptical. We did not think it would last – others had come and gone.

Dad and Beth Ann shared a passion for motorcycles and a passion for family. Dad had been virtually lost to us for 7 years but had now found another rock of stability. While Dad and Beth Ann did not have children of their own they adopted ours. One never doubted Beth Ann’s sincerity – but would the marriage last?

Dad and Beth Ann had an intense relationship – at times very stormy. But last it certainly did. Beth Ann knew the history and even Beth Ann was cracking jokes as the milestones rolled around – 5 years – 10 years – 20 years.

My father was not an easy man to live with. I learned to appreciate the depth of that statement in the past 10 or more years. Beth Ann has said to me on many occasions, “Guy, you owe me big time”. Beth Ann, I most certainly do.

There is a very special bond between Beth Ann and Dad – more than just love. I do not know how else to describe it other than it was very special.

Together, Dad and Beth Ann continued with their passions and engaged in others – Bilco was their family; miniature doll houses; and Beth with her jewellery. Through their passions they built a life together replete with friendships that have stood the test of time.

Dad firmly believed in family. He firmly believed in the welfare of his children and his grandchildren. Given his personal life experiences it is easy to understand why.

Each of the children has certainly tested those beliefs but probably no one more than I. Dad finally was able to afford his dream automobile – an Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale – an absolutely gorgeous automobile and he kept it in immaculate condition. Dad had let me drive it this day to Burlington -to impress my girl friend, my future wife Leny. On my way to lunch to pick up Leny, I totalled it. The fact that there were extenuating circumstances – who cares. The fact that I was going to be very late picking up Leny this day -who cares. Dad was going to KILL me. Oh well, it was time to man up. There was only one thing to do – call MOM!

When I finally saw Dad, he asked how I was. I have been subjected to ridicule and teasing over the years – from my two dear brothers more than anyone, but on that day – not a word from Dad.

Some of our fondest memories are of family – family gatherings and family outings.

Family gatherings were always a highlight. There always seemed to be a board game or a card game involved. It did not matter what it was – Cribbage, Hearts, Bugger your Neighbour, Risk, Acquire, Rail Baron. Competitive? No one gave any quarter – no one took any prisoners. Cards – any card game – was the passion in Queensville. Gaming was never Mother’s strength but it was always a source of amusement. Beth Ann was certainly a quick study. Dad was good at just about everything as long it did not have a joy stick. Whether they be the Risk marathons like the “all-nighter” at Aunt Heather’s or the current craze that has lasted almost 20 years – Acquire – gaming is it. At least it was a passion we could all afford!

As Dad’s grandson Travis penned in his Granddad’s obituary, “He started his life during the Great Depression and it ended with all the riches of a loving family.” There was a lot of living in the middle, but it certainly speaks volumes with respect to his life.

2009 in Retrospect....

It has been 6 months since my last post and so much has happened since then.

I realize that Doctors are human and are only as good as they want to be.

I have the right to question said doctors and not be afraid of their reactions.

I can search out other opinions so I can make informed opinions.

I am a survivor.

I am wealthy beyond all means: I have loving and caring family, neighbours and friends.

I love driving school bus: I have a skill and talent for driving and I enjoy my "kids"! I'm sorry that I cannot support myself in this "occupation", but am willing to "do what it takes" to incorporate it into my livelihood.

I can no longer work inside "boxes" (offices) anymore. I am in awe of people who can do this.

I listen to my body when it says: rest! If I don't, I am not a nice person to be around and I can't seem to help myself and don't think very good!

Life is not fair, but there has to be something good to come out of it.

I don't have to measure up to other people's measuring sticks. I'm perfectly happy with mine and my ability to learn from my mistakes and to take responsibility for my mistakes.

God can be honoured in many different ways and doesn't have to worshipped in a building or feared continually.

Animals are a great comfort to me, but they are not humans. They are companions that take a lot of work!

I have met some awesome people online. We live in a scary, but wonderful world of technology! I choose to embrace it rather than fear it!

Asking for help is not a "sign" of weakness!

Listening and offering help to others is imperative!

Pride can make a person mentally/physically sick!

Last but not the least, I love my husband, Leonard, and hope I can be a comfort to him in the days/weeks/months to come!

I think the last 6 months have made me a better person. I will continue day by day to be a caring, loving wife, sister, daughter, friend, neighbour, co worker, and member of the human race. I will stumble and probably fall, since I am human, but I have the strength through God and those around me to get up, to be helped up and to keep moving forward. I want to be an asset on this earth, not a liability!

Its the last day of July, 2009.... Where has the year gone?

Time is fleeting..... boy, that is an understatement!

School ended the end of June. My brother, Mark married Claudia on July 2. It was a gorgeous wedding. Just our immediate families. Mother's husband, Mervyn died July 13. We knew he was sick, but it still was a shock. Had Uxbridge Ribfest in July. That was a hoot and the weather was cool, but not too rainy. Attendance was down though.... I think it was the weather. The venue is awesome and the Lion's Club were advertising.

Bilko, our oldest Boston Terrier, is declining. He is totally blind and deaf. When he barks we go see what he is up too. I think he sleeps 22+ hours a day. At least he is still eating and drinking and still likes going outside to do his business! July 20, I noticed he had a bloody eye. I freaked. He had ruptured his eyeball. Dr. Debbie, our vet, was very matter of fact.... even if we could justify the expense of surgery, Bilko probably couldn't handle it. Bil doesn't seem to be in much pain and I just clean the area and Leonard and I both comfort him.

Leonard split and stacked all the wood we have in less than a week. He's my hero!

We have had dismal weather for the last 10 days.... I need sunshine, not clouds. I feel for the farmers around here, the corn is behind and hay doesn't look too good either. Too wet and cool. Sure hope the potatoes aren't rotting! At least it is mainly sunny today. This is Ontario's Civic Holiday weekend. Hopefully we will see some of Leonard's family this weekend.

In two weeks is Art in the Park in Uxbridge. That is always a well run show. I just have to keep working on my rings so that I have a great selection!

That's it for today, the last day of July......

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://duchessofwire.blogspot.com/2009/07/its-last-day-of-july-2009-where-has.html' title='Its the last day of July, 2009.... What about the "custom" birdbath we have in the yard: The hose in the bottom left corner is connected to the basement sump pump and the drainage melts the snow. When it pumps the robins stand in the water and take baths. Leonard and I crack up just watching them. Such priceless entertainment.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://duchessofwire.blogspot.com/2009/04/then-next-morning.html' title='Then.... No, I haven't tried it yet, but a representative from Grobet, replied to my inquiries since Grobet bought out Dixon. Well here is a bit of what she replied:

This is not an item that we carry any longer. May I ask were you bought it from. The last catalog it shows up in was in 1983. All it said in the catalog was that the solution you have is for etching copper. We have no information on this item.

When I got this reply, I just started laughing.... I'll still try it, but isn't it amazing how long things get pushed back on shelves and storerooms. We had a blast.

The drive down was slushy and it was extremely cold, but the sun was shining and company great. Parking was a breeze since it just wasn't very busy where we were looking/shopping!

I had only one goal. Find ferric chloride to etch copper. Canada and chemicals.... in the States I'd probably be able to find ferric chloride in the corner store, but even The Source I checked didn't have any. Anyway, we stopped at T.G.W. on Victoria St. to check and they said they didn't handle it. Of course I can't go into a jewelry supply without poking around and I found this on a shelf: Mordant for Etching.

I don't have a clue what it is, how old it is or how toxic it is. It says it contains muriatic acid and to chase it down with milk of magnesia should I feel the urge to taste it! I know the company that manufactured it is owned by Grobet, so I sent an email to them asking for information. Time will tell... I also got a sheet of 24 g copper. I would have preferred 22 g, but I take what I can get!

We left the wholesale district and headed over to Queen St. W. and I couldn't believe that Arton was closed. Arton is the candy store of inexpensive findings/beads (cheap and cheerful). We passed up The Beadery since it is just too overpriced and went into Bling Bling. They were having an end of year sale and I picked up some plastic shaped beads that appealed to me for my Little Princess line. Cathy said there was a newer bead store down the the street and we found it.

It is called Bead It and it is a clean/bright shop with the usual fare. I wasn't planning on buying beads... I was on a thwarted quest for ferric chloride... but I had to bring these home. I wanted a strand of every color, but stopped at a strand of hearts and the lemon candies. The hearts are foiled with frit floating on them under a smooth glass cap. I got the burgandy based ones. The lemon squares make me think of Dick and Jane readers, summer days and candy.... How could I leave anything behind that evoked those feelings? LOL Anyway, they are supposedly Italian. In this day and age, I wonder, but the line does have murrini encased in them and they don't "look" Chinese.

Anyway, what a great day to end the year.... shopping for jewelry supplies. Life is good.

Happy Birthday to MEEEE!

Today is my day and I am blowing my own horn! I'm happy and fortunate to be in good health, married to a good man, and have good friends....

I was very lazy and fell back to sleep this morning and woke to the phone ringing.... It kept ringing so I got up to answer and I heard "Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday!!!!" I was pretty foggy and didn't recognize the voice and asked who it was....? "Faye!" More nanosecond head scratching when she said she always wishes everyone happy birthday and since I wasn't at work, she had to call me at home! AWWWWW!!! Lightbulb goes on! It is Faye, one of the super dispatchers from work. Talk about warming the cockles of my little black heart!!!.... Sure did taste good!

I truly am blessed!

Happy 53rd Birthday to me!

My Boys

These are "my boys". Bilko (on the right) was our first. We "inherited" Chance this past May. Someone had dumped him alongside the road and animal control picked him up. I was called since animal control wondered if he was Bilko. Long story short, we got him a week later. I don't think he had a life outside of a crate and the vet thinks he was used for breeding. He was not house trained, marked his territory, hated the crate and fell down the stairs. After two days he could navigate the stairs. Within a month, he was house trained. We had him neutered and the marking stopped. He still hates the crate. We bought him a fancy bed and he'd only sleep in it if I put him in it and went to bed. He had to sleep with us. His idea of sleeping with us is with his head on the pillows between us and Bilko at his feet. We named him Chance, as in "last chance". Animal control would have put him down if we would not have come forward since his manners weren't that wonderful.

Chance learned his name fast. I learned fast not to try to hand feed him. Evidentally food was of utmost importance to him since he would wolf his down and go look for Bilko's. That caused a massive problem.... He started bleeding from the front of his lower gum one day. He bleed for two + days. We thought he was a goner. The vet didn't think he was going to make it either. We still don't know what caused this, but we think he got into some type of poison since he would try to eat anything. He was on steriods for a month and got better. We weaned him off the steriods and the house accidents stopped. We were glad he was alive.

Chance is my dog. I go to the kitchen, he's right behind me. I go downstairs, he's there. I sit here at the computer and he lays on the rug beside my chair. When he goes outdoors he doesn't wander to far from the back step. When I call, he comes.

Chance knows I drive the school bus. He doesn't try to go out with me anymore since he knows I'm coming home. Len says Chance starts barking when I pull up in front of the house and get ready to back in. He is waiting for me at the back door. He is a good dog.

Chance has adapted very well to his new life. He knows how to sit and takes treats without me loosing a finger. He doesn't rush Bilko's food and doesn't always eat all of his in the first minute. The biggest change has been in the car... he gets in and sleeps. Before he'd stand in a corner or try to get under my feet on the driver's side. That has stopped. I don't know what we did before Chance. I don't think Bilko does either. I'm glad he has come into our lives.

Uh-ohhhh

Since I'm of that age of taking nightly trips to the washroom.... I encountered one of my worst nightmares at 4:30 a.m.... flooded basement! For some reason the sump pump didn't come on. I must have jiggled something when I was looking into the hole and it came on... Unfortunately the basement floor isn't level.

I have spent this day mopping and slogging water. The carpet is still wet.... I can only hope that I can extract more water from it tomorrow. I have pains in my body that shouldn't feel like this! LOL

There is no one to blame but myself. I can't even blame it as an "act of God"! I knew it rained inches yesterday and melted feet of snow so I should have checked it before I went to bed, but....

Guess I'm going to get a head start on clearing/cleaning out the basement this week.

If there is an upside to this mess, it is this.... Leonard spent the night at his son's house and I was asked to stay also, but the dogs were home and I didn't want them to be by themselves, so I went home. If we would have come home at 3 p.m. today, OMG! I don't want to think of mess! Nope this post doesn't have anything to do with wire, but it is about living.

The Wheels On The Bus Go Round 'n Round.....

I have acquired my "B" license and am driving a school bus now. I just love wrapping rings. I guess it stems from my childhood... I never had rings and always wanted them. When I was in high school, I must have thought they were too expensive and was too timid to ask: "How much does it cost?" So, I now make inexpensive wrapped rings that make the wearer happy.... at least they make me happy! Yes, I have made rings for all my fingers and toes and then some.... Want to have some adventure in your life? Buy a "fun", "OMG" or "what was I thinkin' " ring.... I can probably fit the bill.... THIS ring is for the conservative minded. I start with non tarnish silver Artistic Wire and 5 mm gold filled filigree beads, 5 mm champagne czech glass beads and jet Swarovski crystals. Then I wrap, twist and curl and VOILE: A ring is produced. Conservative, but fun and sparkly. Watch for more to come....!

Last Flowers of Autumn

September 2008 is almost over and I'm activating my blog again. For an outdoor show, it is one of the most scenic. The trees are gorgeous and the weather was phenomenal this year too. I enjoyed looking at the different vendors. I bought a fused glass pendant from Judi Waymark of The Glass Garden. I liked her colour combinations and shapes. She has control over the shape of the glass.

We attended Kawartha Arts Festival at the Fenelon Fairgrounds in Fenelon Falls, ON this past weekend. It was another gorgeous day. Most of the art was paintings. A few of the artisans stood out though... One was Victor Lee. He enamels on coins and then puts them in a silver finding. (Lee's Fine Enamel, http://www.eEnamel.com/) Another was Bearpaw Jewellery (http://www.bearpawjewellery.com/). Most of their work was pierced silver designs. Then there was a non jewelry craftsman, William Edwards. He carves pictures and makes photo albums. I liked his work and his attitude. I like happy people.

There are a whole bunch of fairs and studio tours coming up, too. Today is March 22, 2007. My has time flown by.

This post is about the Bead Oasis Show in Toronto at the Convention Centre March 9-11, 2007. I worked with Dywn Tomlinson at Dragon Jools. (www.Dragonjools.com) Dywn's style is evolving quickly. Her dragon beads are so beautiful. She built one that looked like a dragon of hematite hanging onto a jewel of moonstone. It is awesome. I wish I had a picture of it. She doesn't have one on her website either. Bad, Dwyn...but of course, she has had her share of problems lately too. LOL

I so enjoyed seeing everyone at the show. It had been at least 6 months since I had seen anyone. Sue Wise, Kirstie Naray, Amy Waldman Smith, Amy Johnson, Erin Maloney, Neal, Grace (Lauscha Lady) and a lampworker from Celestial Stained Glass were in attendance. I enjoy looking at everyone's creations. Erin Maloney and her husband, Jay, from Air Wynn Glass Designs (www.airwynnglass.com) were attending the show for the first time. Erin is definitely an up and comer. I find it so amazing that people using the same type of equipment and same type of glass can come up with such decidedly different designs and techniques!

Yes, I made a few purchases. Rainbow Minerals and Beading (www.rainbowminerals.com) called my name in pearls. Cynthia from Kulu Trading (kulu@rogers.com) had some gorgeous Amazonite that I couldn't refuse. Then there was Dana from Stones and Findings (www.stonesandfindings.com). Dana designs her findings and creates the palettes of her dyed jade. I loved them all. Her chain is cutting edge and colours of jade gorgeous! I wish I had more money.

Bead Oasis Show, September 29 - October 1, 2006

I am so behind in this blog!!!!! I can't believe that September has flown by and it is already the third of October!

This past weekend was the Bead Oasis Show at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. I was with Dwyn Tomlinson of DragonJools (http://www.dragonjools.com/). Of course, I got to see all the other lampworkers too and other beaders I haven't seen for a few months.

Dwyn moderates CdnJoolbead at Yahoo groups and some of the members were at the show. Hi, Suzanne and Charmaine from Edmonton! Annick, Eleni and Jean were there too. It is so nice to put faces and names together.

I still have to take and post picks of MY treasures that I acquired at the show. Hopefully this will be done and posted by Saturday, October 7, 2006.

Another notable, I met Shelley and Joseph from MetalDesignz from Saskatchewan. Dylon Whyte was with them too. So very exciting!!!! More about them later.

Gotta run..... check back by the weekend for more babbling and pics!

ba

What a Gorgeous Day!

What another gorgeous day in S. Warm, bright sunshine and a cool breeze.

I thought I'd post some pictures from our garden. It is totally perennial this year and has been established for about 6 years. We didn't have a single delphinium this year. I guess I'll have to plant some next year. Anyway, what we have is gorgeous. I go out and see the monarchs fluttering around the echinaceas. I love this time of year. I don't have a clue as to what the yellow flowers are.... they are prolific and gorgeous.

MY ART CLAY SILVER BEADS!!!!

As stated in a previous post I took an Art Clay Silver Class with Jennifer Tough at beadF/X in Scarborough on August 4, 2006. These are the finished product.... fired and tumbled. For a first time attempt, I'm pleased with the results. They aren't as rough as I thought they would be and my CZ's didn't fall out during tumbling, so I must have secured them better than I thought. The bead at 9 o'clock in the picture is the only round one. The long, tubular bead at 5 o'clock has 4 trillion (triangle shape) CZ's. I must say that I do love that shape.

I saw another student's work (HI, Erin), and her beads were awesome. This girl has the TOUCH! Go, ERIN!

Now, I have to start on my next batch of beads. I have some ideas floating in my head for designs. Now to do them.

Caribbean Flower Bangle Class

Goodness! Did I ever have a great time last Thursday evening, August 10, 2006 with the girls while teaching them how to do the Caribbean Flower Bangle at beadF/X in Scarborough, ON. It was a tad warm in the classroom, but the fan made a cool breeze while we made our bangles. I swear, I laughed so much that I felt light headed when I left the class. I hope the others had as good of a time.
I think they might have learned something too! I look forward to seeing Annick's necklace.

The Caribbean Flower Bangle is a beginner wire class that uses a twining technique. They are like potato chips, I just can't stop making them. Hopefully you will feel that way too when you take the class.

These pictures are from the Light & Lively, Chunky, Funky Necklace class held at beadF/X on Saturday, August 5, 2006. There were 7 of us in attendance and it was so much FUN! Thank you, Jen and thank you, girls, for the awesome learning experience and wonderful camaraderie. I think we all felt the same when Jen opened a fresh package of clay and we realized that 20 grams is the size of a piece of Double Bubble Gum. (yup, I'm dating myself.)
We made layered beads, hollow beads and a tube bead. We embellished our beads with stamps and applied ACS in cut out patterns. We even got to use cubic zirconias.

We used ACS 650 slow dry clay, ACS paste and an ACS syringe. Jen is now firing and tumbling our pieces. I can hardly wait to see the finished product . I want to critique my initial beads before I build more so that if I am making a mistake or two (G).... I won't be repeating them through ignorance.

I enjoy Jen's teaching style. She knows Art Clay Silver and she guided us patiently through each step. She is generous with materials and sources. She has a wonderful selection of stamps and cutters. I look forward to learning more from her. Oh and yes, I want to do more with ACS.

To purchase Art Clay Silver or to take classes, check out beadF/X in Scarborough or go online at www.beadF/X.com.

Look out world, I'm WIRED!!!!

I'm working on something new.....
